It was my pleasure. Growing up in a Catholic Comprehensive school in the 1970s provided many peculiar experiences but without doubt one of the most rewarding was having a copy of Barefootz Funnies #2 confiscated simultaneously by the Art Master and a Nun, only to have both seperately ask me later if they could borrow the others or where to find their own copies.

It still warms the cockles of my mind's eye to picture a determined nun (there is no other kind) cruising the grim streets of Soho trying to find Dark They Were and Golden Eyed (Britain's first comics, Sci Fi and head shop) looking for underground commix...

Moreover it's simpy a crime these stories aren't permanently in print like Asterix, Tintin, Maus and other perfect marriages of art and narrative.

Hey, Win, it was a nice surprise to see friendly attention being paid to Early Barefootz after all these years, since it went out of print quite a few years ago. Many thanks for your generous assessment.

Hi,

I work for Campfire Graphic Novels, a graphic novel publisher in New Delhi, India that was set up in the year 2008. Our titles are divided in four categories, which includes: Classics, Mythology, Biography and Originals. From Classic titles ‘Alice in Wonderland’ & ‘Robinson Crusoe’ to the Biography of ‘Harry Houdini’ & ‘Wright Brothers’, we adapt these stories and turn them into graphic novels.

Apart from our youth, our titles are also distributed in Europe, Middle East and we have recently launched our first set of titles in the USA and Canada through Random House Publishers. I am attaching a copy of our catalogue and Press kit along with this e- mail. If you want to know more about us, just let me know and I will be happy to send some review copies to you.

Best,
R

In at least one interview, Carmine Infantino (then DC Publisher) claimed to have created and plotted both the Demon and Kamandi. On the face of it this seems rather unlikely, so I suspect that what he really means is that he suggested that horror might be the way to go with a new series following the forced demise of the Fourth World.

Melding horror and super-heroes was fairly logical given DC's output at the time: Swamp Thing (horror and sci-fi), Dark Mansion (horror and romance), Jonah Hex (horror and western), Weird War Tales (horror and war), Plop! (horror and humour)!

Hi Sean.

Thanks for the kind words. Good to know you stuck with it.

Writing comics is a long-time proposition though, so as long as you keep typing and the older guys keep dying, there's always going to be that moment when you get your shot at the majors.

Actually 50 Commandos is pretty major by anybody's standards. Have you been collected yet? I love those giant book compilations and must review a few more some time.

Regarding the Comics Creators Guild - a lot of the contact is electronic now. You can join and get stuff and comradeship via the jolly old interweb tubes anywhere in the world...

Hi W!n,
Enjoying the reviews... I did your comics writing course a billion years ago, well back in 1997. Since then I have written about 50 Commandos but have yet to conquer the wider comics world (unlike Ferg Handley!). Would rejoin the CCG but I am working for ESA in Holland right now.
Cheers,
Sean Blair

I remember this very vividly, though I couldn't recall the heroine's name. Kiki I definitely remember! For some reason I had it in my mind that it had been drawn by Enrique Romero, but obviously not. Still, he soon came along with this strip's replacement: Axa.
