An extremely talented artist best known for Illustrating <\/span><\/i><b><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Marvelman\/Miracleman<\/span><\/i><\/b><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">, <\/span><\/i><b><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Dan Dare<\/span><\/i><\/b><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">, and <\/span><\/i><b><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">The V.C.&#8217;s<\/span><\/i><\/b><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">, he was also a dedicated mover and shaker behind the scenes; quietly helping many other creators on the way to their own fame and glory. Our condolences go out to his friends and family, and here&#8217;s a review of one his most important and significant ventures&#8230;<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">A1<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> began in 1988 as an anthology showcase dedicated to comics creativity. Freed from the usual strictures of mainstream publishers, the project consequently attracted many of the world&#8217;s top writers and artists to produce work at once personal and experimental, comfortingly familiar and, on occasion, deucedly odd.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Editors Garry Leach &amp; Dave Elliott periodically returned to their baby and in 2013 the title and concept were resurrected under the aegis of Titan Comics to provide more of the same.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Similarly committed to past excellence and future triumphs &#8211; and following the grandest tradition of British comics &#8211; this classic compendium offered the same eclectic mix of material old and new\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">After a colossal 2-page dedication\/thank you to everyone from Frank Bellamy to <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Face Ache <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">in <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8216;The Dream Days are Back: The One&#8217;s Especially For You\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6&#8217;<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\"> the cartoon carnival commences with a truly \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Golden Oldie\u00e2\u20ac\u009d as Joe Simon &amp; Jack Kirby (and inked by Al Williamson) provide science fiction classic <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8216;Island in the Sky&#8217;<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\"> &#8211; which first surfaced in Harvey Comic&#8217;s <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Race for the Moon<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> #2 September, 1958. Here an expired astronaut returns from death thanks to something he picked up on Jupiter\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Each tale here is accompanied by fulsome creator biographies and linked by factual snippets about most artists&#8217; \u00e2\u20ac\u0153drug of choice\u00e2\u20ac\u009d. These photographic examples of coffee barista self-expression (with all <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8216;Latte Art&#8217;<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\"> courtesy of Coffee Labs Roasters) are followed by illustrator Alex Sheikman &amp; scripter Norman Felchle&#8217;s invitation to the baroque, terpsichorean delights of the <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8216;Odd Ball&#8217;<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The fantastic gothic revisionism resumes after another coffee-break as the sublime Sandy Plunkett details in captivating monochrome the picaresque perils of life in a sprawling urban underworld with his <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8216;Tales of Old Fennario&#8217;.<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8216;Odyssey: A Question of Priorities&#8217;<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\"> by Elliot, Toby Cypress &amp; Sakti Yuwono is a thoroughly up-to-date interpretation of pastiche patriotic avenger <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Old Glory<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">, who now prowls modern values-challenged America, regretting choices he&#8217;s made and the timbre of his current superhero comrades\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8216;Image Duplicator&#8217;<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\"> by Rian Hughes &amp; Dave Gibbons is, for me, the most fascinating feature included here, detailing and displaying comics creator&#8217;s admirable responses to the appropriation and rapine of comic book images by \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Pop\u00e2\u20ac\u009d artist Roy Lichtenstein.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">In a move to belatedly honour the honest jobbing creators simultaneously ripped off and denigrated by the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153recontextualisation\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and transformation to High Art, Hughes &amp; Gibbons approached a number of professionals from all sectors of the commercial arts and asked them to re-appropriate Lichtenstein&#8217;s efforts.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The results were displayed in the exhibition <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Image Duplicator<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> with all subsequent proceeds donated to the charity Hero Initiative which benefits comic creators who have fallen on hard times.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">In this feature are the results of the comic book fightback with contributions from Hughes, Gibbons, FuFu Frauenwahl, Carl Flint, Howard Chaykin, Salgood Sam, Mark Blamire, Steve Cook, Garry Leach, Dean Motter, Jason Atomic, David Leach, Shaky Kane, Mark Stafford, Graeme Ross, Kate Willaert &amp; Zuberman &amp; Batguy in One Adventure Together!&#8217;<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\"> and Dominic Regan crafts a stunning Technicolor tornado of intriguing illumination as <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Doctor Arachnid<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\"> has to deal with cyber <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Psychedelia<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\"> and a divinely outraged <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8216;Little Star&#8217;<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Bill Sienkiewicz&#8217;s<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\"> &#8216;Emily Almost&#8217;<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00c2\u00a0 first appeared in the original <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">A1<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> #4; a bleak paean to rejection seen here in muted moody colour, after which Scott Hampton revisits the biblical tale of <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8216;Daniel&#8217;<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\"> and Jim Steranko re-presents his groundbreaking, experimental multi-approach silent story <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8216;Frogs!&#8217;<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\"> before following up with <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8216;Steranko: Frogs!&#8217; <\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">is a prose vignette of mystic Steampunk Victoriana written by Madeleine Holly-Rosing from her webcomic, ably illustrated by Emily Hu, whilst <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8216;Mr. Monster&#8217;<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\"> by Alan Moore &amp; Michael T. Gilbert (with inks from Bill Messner-Loebs) is a reprint of <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8216;The Riddle of the Recalcitrant Refuse!&#8217; <\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">first found in #3 (1985) of the horror hunter&#8217;s own series. It recounts how a dead bag-lady turns the city upside out when her mania for sorting junk transcends both death and our hero&#8217;s best efforts\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8216;The Weirding Willows: Origins of Evil&#8217;<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\"> by Elliot, Barnaby Bagenda &amp; Jessica Kholinne is one of the fantasy features from the later A1 iteration &#8211; a dark reinterpretation of beloved childhood characters like <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Alice<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">, <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Ratty<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">, <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Toad<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\"> and <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Mole<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">, which fans of Bill Willingham&#8217;s <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Fables <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">should certainly appreciate\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8216;Devil&#8217;s Whisper&#8217;<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\"> by James Robinson &amp; D&#8217;Israeli also came from <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">A1<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> #4, and features Matt Wagner&#8217;s signature creation <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Grendel <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6or does it?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Stechgnotic then waxes lyrical about Barista art in <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8216;The Artful Latte&#8217;<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\"> after which <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8216;Melting Pot &#8211; In the Beginning&#8217;<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\"> by Kevin Eastman, Eric Talbot &amp; Simon Bisley ends the affair; revisiting the ghastly hellworld where the gods spawned an ultimate survivor through the judicious and repeated application of outrageous bloody violence.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Of course it&#8217;s a trifle arrogant and rather daft to claim any collection as \u00e2\u20ac\u0153The World&#8217;s Greatest Comics\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and &#8211; to be honest \u00e2\u20ac\u201c these weren&#8217;t.
