Since the 1960s and the birth of the Civil Rights Movement, comics have always been at the forefront of the battle for equality. Maybe more so in terms of racial issues at the start and not so much on gender disparity or sexual complexity, but now most print and screen superheroes work towards greater diversity and inclusion. The most noticeable strides and breakthroughs have come from industry leaders DC and Marvel, but maybe it\u2019s just that more is expected of them\u2026<\/p>\n

In 2021, the former celebrated accumulated personal freedoms by collecting one-shot DC Pride<\/strong> #1 and select material from similarly-themed specials New Years Evil<\/strong> #1, Mysteries of Love in Space<\/strong> #1 and Young Monsters in Love<\/strong> #1 (cumulatively spanning 2018-2021), celebrating the infinite variety of interpersonal relationships focusing on LGBTQIA+ characters in the DC catalogue as interpreted by creators equally all-embracing.<\/p>\n

The compilation – variously lettered by Aditya Bidikar, Josh Reed, Arian Maher, Becca Carey, Steve Wands, Tom Napolitano and Dave Sharpe – opens with a fulsome Foreword from Out & Proud bestselling author and comics scribe Mark Andreyko before we plunge into assorted antics\u2026<\/p>\n

James Tynion IV & Trung Le Nguyen begin the festivities with \u2018The Wrong Side of the Looking Glass\u2019<\/em> as Batwoman <\/strong>Kate Kane<\/em> confronts memories of her twin sister\/deranged arch nemesis Alice and how her enforced solitude after Beth Kane seemingly died may have affected her own life path, after which John Constantine<\/strong> meets magician Extra<\/strong>\u00f1o<\/strong> in a pub and starts chatting. Gregorio de la Vega<\/em> was officially DC\u2019s first openly gay super-character, debuting in weekly megaseries Millennium<\/strong> #2 (January 1988) and latterly as a member of The New Guardians<\/strong>. For \u2018Time in a Bottle\u2019<\/em> creators Steve Orlando & Stephen Byrne pit him in a tall tale contest co-starring Midnighter<\/strong> and featuring queer Nazi vampire cultist Count Berlin<\/em>\u2026<\/p>\n

Vita Ayala, Skylar Patridge and colourist Jos\u00e9 Villarrubia then set lesbian cop Renee Montoya<\/em> and her alter ego The Question<\/strong> on the trail of a missing politician in \u2018Try the Girl\u2019<\/em> whilst Mariko Tamaki, Amy Reeder & Marissa Louise have Harley Quinn & Poison Ivy <\/strong>spectacularly and near-lethally address their unique relationship problems in \u2018Another Word for a Truck to Move Your Furniture\u2019<\/em>.<\/p>\n

After being in the closet since the 1930s, original Green Lantern<\/strong> Alan Scott<\/em> shares the story of his first love with openly out son Todd<\/em> AKA Obsidian<\/strong>. As related by Sam Johns, Klaus Janson & colourist Dave McCaig, \u2018He\u2019s the Light of My Life!\u2019<\/em> is a sweet romantic interlude balanced by \u2018Clothes Makeup Gift\u2019<\/em> – by Danny Lore, Lisa Sterle & Enrica Angiolini – a female wherein future Flash <\/strong>multitasks prepping for a date with a new girlfriend and taking down a Mirror Master<\/strong> knockoff Reflek<\/em>\u2026<\/p>\n

The Flash connection continues with reformed Rogue Pied Piper <\/strong>foiling and then mentoring social activist outlaw Drummer Boy<\/em> in wry caper \u2018Be Gay, Do Crime\u2019<\/em> by Sina Grace, Ro Stein & Ted Brandt before DCTV superhero Dreamer<\/strong> makes their comic book debut in \u2018Date Night\u2019<\/em>, courtesy of Nicole Maines, Rachael Stott and Angiolini.<\/p>\n

Arch villains Monsieur Mallah<\/em> and The Brain <\/em>prove to gay cop Maggie Sawyer<\/em> that love truly comes in all forms in Orlando & Nic Klein\u2019s moving confrontation \u2018Visibility\u2019<\/em> after which Lobo<\/strong>\u2019s troubled, long-abandoned daughter Crush<\/strong> learns some hard truths from the wrong role model in \u2018Crushed\u2019<\/em> by Andrea Shea and Amancay Nahuelpan Trish Mulvihill\u2026<\/p>\n

Harley Quinn offers her particular seasonal felicitations to Renee Montoya and Gotham City in Ayala, Elena Casagrande & Jordie Bellaire\u2019s rendition of \u2018Little Christmas Tree\u2019<\/em> prior to a host of gay heroes attending a Pride March and forming a team of their own to battle Eclipso<\/strong> in \u2018Love Life\u2019<\/em> by Andrew Wheeler, Luciano Vecchio & Rez Lokus.<\/p>\n
