Here\u2019s a crucial past highpoint in a wave of historical and biographical visual celebrations seeking to redress centuries of gender injustice while providing true life role models for coming generations&#8230; if we have any.<\/p>\n<p>Crafted by writer, editor and journalist Marie Moinard (<strong><em>En chemin elle recontre<\/em><\/strong>, <strong><em>La petite vieille du Vendredi<\/em><\/strong>) &amp; Christelle Pecout (<strong><em>Lune d\u2019Ombre<\/em><\/strong>, <strong><em>Hypathie<\/em><\/strong>, <strong><em>Histoires et l\u00e9gendes normandes<\/em><\/strong>)<em>,<\/em> <strong><em>Les d\u00e9couvreuses<\/em><\/strong> is a cheery compendium made comprehensible to us via translation into English by the fine folk at NBM. As the name suggests, <strong>Women Discoverers<\/strong> focuses on 20 NOT MALE scientists and researchers who generally sans fanfare, or even fair credit, changed the world. Some are thankfully still doing so.<\/p>\n<p>A combination of comics vignettes and short illustrated data epigrams preceded by an impassioned Introduction from Marie-Sophie Pawlak (President of the Elles Bougent scientific society), the revelations begin with an extended strip history citing some of the achievements of the peerless <em>Marie Curie<\/em> &#8211; whose discoveries in chemistry and physics practically reinvented the planet. She is followed by brief vignettes of French biologist <em>Fran\u00e7oise Barr\u00e9-Sinoussi <\/em>(discoverer of the HIV retrovirus), Canadian physicist <em>Donna Th\u00e9o Strickland<\/em> (laser amplification) and African-American <em>Dorothy Vaughan <\/em>whose mathematical and computing skills served the world at NASA.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.comicsreview.co.uk\/nowreadthis\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/women-Discoverers-illo-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2111\" height=\"1481\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-32389\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.comicsreview.co.uk\/nowreadthis\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/women-Discoverers-illo-1.jpg 2111w, https:\/\/www.comicsreview.co.uk\/nowreadthis\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/women-Discoverers-illo-1-150x105.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.comicsreview.co.uk\/nowreadthis\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/women-Discoverers-illo-1-250x175.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.comicsreview.co.uk\/nowreadthis\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/women-Discoverers-illo-1-768x539.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.comicsreview.co.uk\/nowreadthis\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/women-Discoverers-illo-1-1536x1078.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.comicsreview.co.uk\/nowreadthis\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/women-Discoverers-illo-1-2048x1437.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><br \/>\nIt\u2019s back to comics for <em>Ada Lovelace <\/em>who revolutionized mathematics and invented computer programming, after which single page biographies describe the achievements of and lengths undertaken by French mathematician <em>Gabrielle \u00c9milie Le Tonnelier de Breteuil, Marquise du Ch\u00e2telet<\/em> AKA <em>\u00c9milie du Ch\u00e2telet<\/em> to attend men-only institutions in the days of the Enlightenment, before writing world-changing philosophical magnum opus <strong><em>Institutions de Physique<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Although separated by centuries, mathematicians <em>Emmy Noether <\/em>(Germany 1882-1935) and Niger-born<em> Grace Alele-Williams <\/em>(December 16<sup>th<\/sup> 1932 to March 25, 2022) both excelled and triumphed despite male opposition, but their stories pale beside the strip-delivered hardships of screen star, engineer, plastic surgeon and computing\/mobile phone\/internet pioneer <em>Hedy Lamarr<\/em>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Another Nasa stalwart, mathematician\/astrophysicist <em>Katherine Coleman Goble Johnson<\/em>, famously calculated Apollo 11\u2019s life-saving orbit, while paediatrician <em>Marthe Gautier <\/em>discovered the origins of Downs\u2019 Syndrome.
