As big, deep thinking becomes more widespread, representing the <strong>19<sup>th<\/sup> Century<\/strong> are <em>Charles Darwin<\/em>, <em>Claud Bernard<\/em>, <em>Gregor Mendel<\/em>, <em>Louis Pasteur<\/em>, <em>Alfred Nobel<\/em> (suck it, Donny-baby!) and <em>Dmitri Mendeleev<\/em>, after which the revolutionary <strong>19<sup>th<\/sup> &#8211; 20<sup>th<\/sup> Century<\/strong> hones in on <em>Ivan Pavlov<\/em>, <em>Max Planck<\/em>, <em>Marie Curie<\/em>, <em>Albert Einstein<\/em>, <em>Alfred Wegener<\/em>, <em>Alexander Fleming<\/em>, <em>Erwin Schr\u00f6dinger<\/em> and <em>Trofim Lysenko<\/em>. By now it\u2019s probably clear to most of you that this is no simple hagiography: some of the folk here are included because of their effect on scientific progress and it\u2019s not all smiles, acclaim and awards&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The procession of progress pauses with the <strong>20<sup>th<\/sup> &#8211; 21<sup>st<\/sup> Century<\/strong> (because, as of this writing, time travel has not been satisfactorily confirmed or reproduced under laboratory conditions) with controversial and occasionally still-living paragons <em>Konrad Lorenz<\/em>, <em>Alan Turing<\/em>, <em>Alexander Grothendieck<\/em>, <em>James Watson<\/em>, <em>Peter Higgs<\/em>, <em>Yves Coppens<\/em>, <em>Emmanuelle Charpentier<\/em> and the recently lost and already hugely missed <em>Jane Goodall<\/em>.
