The comic book experience is littered with eternal questions that can never really be satisfactorily answered. The most common and most passionately asked always begin \u201cwho would win if…?\u201d or \u201cwho\u2019s strongest\/smartest\/fastest…?\u201d Teenaged scripting wunderkind Jim Shooter knew that very well when he pitched and subsequently scripted a Superman <\/strong>story in 1967 that created a subgenre of comic-plots and led inevitably and delightfully to the graphic compilation under review here.<\/p>\n

DC Editors in the 1960s generally avoided such questions as who\u2019s best for fear of upsetting some portion of their tenuous and supposed-transitory fan-base, but as the superhero boom slowed and the upstart Marvel Comics began to make genuine inroads into their market, the notion of a definitive race between the almighty Man of Steel and the Fastest Man Alive became an increasingly enticing and sales-worthy proposition. This sporty curated chronicle catalogues material from Superman<\/strong> #199, Flash<\/strong> #175, World\u2019s Finest Comics<\/strong> #198-199, DC Comics Presents<\/strong> #1-2, Adventures of Superman<\/strong> #463 & DC First: Flash\/Superman<\/strong>: collectively spanning cover-dates August 1967 through July 2002.

\u2018Superman\u2019s Race with The Flash\u2019<\/em> (Superman<\/strong> #199, August 1967) gets the ball rolling in a stirring saga by Shooter, limned by Curt Swan & George Klein, wherein the two speedy champions are asked to compete in an exhibition contest by the United Nations, to raise money to fight World Hunger. Naturally they agree, but the clever global handicap, circling the planet three times, is secretly and insidiously subverted by rival criminal combines attempting to stage the greatest gambling coup in history…<\/p>\n

Of course, the vile gamblers are foiled and justice and wholesome charity triumph in the end, but the stakes are catastrophically raised in the inevitable rematch from The Flash<\/strong> #175 (December 1967). \u2018Race to the End of the Universe!\u2019<\/em> finds the friendly rivals rocketing across the cosmos after ruthless alien gamblers threaten to eradicate Central City and Metropolis unless the pair settle who was fastest.<\/p>\n

Scripter E. Nelson Bridwell added an ingenious sting in the tale, whilst Ross Andru & Mike Esposito delivered a sterling illustration job in this yarn, but once more the actual winning was deliberately fudged. Presumably to prevent hurt feelings on the part of partisan young readers…

\nWhen World\u2019s Finest Comics<\/strong> became briefly a team-up vehicle for Superman the first guest-star was the Flash, who again found himself in speedy if contrived competition. \u2018Race to Save the Universe!\u2019 <\/em>and its conclusion \u2018Race to Save Time\u2019 <\/em>(by Denny O\u2019Neil, Dick Dillin & Joe Giella in WFC<\/strong> #198-199, November & December 1970) once again upped the stakes as the Guardians of the Universe<\/em> conscripted our high speed heroes to circumnavigate the entire cosmos at their greatest velocities to undo the rampage of the enigmatic Anachronids<\/em>: faster-than-light creatures whose pell-mell course throughout the galaxies was actually unwinding time itself.<\/p>\n

Little did anybody suspect that Superman\u2019s oldest enemies were behind the scheme…<\/p>\n

\u2018Chase to the End of Time!\u2019<\/em> & \u2018Race to the End of Time!\u2019<\/em> opened new team-up series DC Comics Presents<\/strong> (#1-2, July\/August & September\/October 1978) as Marty Pasko, Jos\u00e9 Luis Garc\u00eda-L\u00f3pez & Dan Adkins rather reprised that World\u2019s Finest tale with two eternally-warring alien races tricking Superman & Flash into speeding through the time-stream to prevent Earth\u2019s history from being corrupted and destroyed. As if that wasn\u2019t dangerous enough, nobody could predict the deadly intervention of the Scarlet Speedster\u2019s most dangerous foe: Professor Zoom, the Reverse-Flash<\/em>…

\nAfter the continuity-shattering Crisis on Infinite Earths<\/strong> mega-event, DC heroes got a sound refitting, and the frankly colossal power levels of the costumed community were suitably downscaled to more believable limits. Some stalwarts even died, and so when \u2018Speed Kills!\u2019<\/em> appeared in Adventures of Superman<\/strong> #463 (February 1990 by writer\/artist Dan Jurgens and inker Art Thibert), the issue was touted as the first race between the fastest men on Earth. Of course, there was a new kid in the Flash\u2019s uniform: former sidekick Wally West<\/em> had graduated to the role after his mentor Barry Allen<\/em> perished saving the universes in that aforementioned epic.<\/p>\n

The story itself is a delightfully whacky romp wherein 5th<\/sup> dimensional gadfly Mr. Mxyzptlk<\/em> coerces the pair into running a race everybody knows is fixed from the get-go…<\/p>\n

This selection concludes with a spectacular saga unerringly aimed at older fans. \u2018Speeding Bullets\u2019<\/em> (from one-shot DC First: Flash\/Superman<\/strong> July 2002) is by Geoff Johns, Rick Burchett & Prentis Rollins, and features futuristic villain Abra Kadabra<\/em> who challenges the Man of Steel and 1940s Flash Jay Garrick<\/em> to catch the current Vizier of Velocity – currently running amok at hyperspeed and rapid-aging with every step he takes. If they can\u2019t catch him then the Fastest Man Alive won\u2019t be for long…
