A lifetime ago in January 2012, Oxford-based publisher David Fickling Books<\/em> launched a traditional-seeming anthology comic weekly aimed at girls and boys between 6 – 12 which revelled in reviving the good old days of picture-story entertainment intent, whilst embracing the full force of modernity in style and content. Each issue offers humour & adventure strips (most subsequently gathered into a formidable library of stunning Graphic Novels); quizzes; puzzles; educational material and drawing\/storytelling tips comprising a joyous parade of cartoon fun and fantasy and, in the years since its premiere, The Phoenix<\/strong> has become a staple of kids\u2019 fun, winning praise from the Great and the Good, child literacy experts and the only people who really count – the utterly engaged kids and parents who read it…<\/p>\n

The magazine celebrated its first anniversary by launching a digital edition available globally as an app and continually expands its horizons. These days they offer internet added value via an ongoing tutorial fun-lab dubbed the Phoenix Comics Club<\/strong>…<\/p>\n

As part of the company\u2019s line of comic albums those invaluable observations and exercises were superbly repackaged into a lexicon of hands-on instruction: a not-so-serious foundation course in cartoon wonder-making no aspiring comic book genius can afford to be without.<\/p>\n

Broken down into six chapters and (more or less) 21 easily assimilated lessons, the book also makes full use of modern technologies, with exercises, cartoon cheats and spare drawing pages all included as well as downloadable from the internet.

With work-philosophy fully engaged and imaginations suitably fired up, Chapter 3<\/strong> then determines What\u2019s a Comic?<\/strong> as Lesson 7 (Warning! Clowns at work!) focuses on the basics with How Awesome Comics Work<\/strong><\/em>, whilst L8 details How to Make Funny<\/strong> Comics <\/em>– with many strip examples!<\/p>\n
