This action-heavy compilation starts the clean-up process as the current series prepares for cancellation by taking a number of the key premises of this incarnation and negating them. Rather than go for the favoured comics ploys of re-writing reality the creators have opted for Selina Kyle enlisting the aid of trusted friends to cover her tracks and “disappear” her.

Collecting issues #66-72, and featuring a somewhat muddled and misguided cross-over with the DC Universe Event Amazons Attack!, super-thief, single mum, and unelected guardian of Gotham’s East Side Catwoman is driven to finally forsake her life due to her increasingly high profile on the radar of such villains as Lex Luthor, the Calculator, Blitzkrieg and especially the relentless, revenge-obsessed Soviet superhumans Hammer and Sickle.

Although still a good solid read, the end is in sight and creators Pfeifer, Lopez and Lopez know they’re on clean-up detail. Necessary and enjoyable for established fans, but this isn’t the book to start with if you’re a new reader.

Spinning off from the weekly series 52 and by extension Infinite Crisis, this intriguing take on Heroism features Booster Gold – a hero traditionally only in it for fame and fortune – acting as a secret saviour, repairing the cracks in Reality caused by all the universe-warping shenanigans of myriad universal, multiversal Crises. Working at the instruction of the enigmatic Rip Hunter: Time Master, Booster forgoes all his dreams of acclaim to save us all over and over again.

In this volume (collecting issues #1-6 of the monthly series) whilst undertaking this monumental plastering job, Hunter and Booster find themselves at war with a gang of villains using time-travel to eradicate superheroes before they can begin their careers. In short order he reinstates the events that lead to the creation of Green Lantern, both the Barry Allen and Wally West Flashes, and via a unique team-up with butt-faced bounty hunter Jonah Hex, even Superman himself.

Along the way he has to take steps to ensure his own birth by introducing his 20th century ancestor to his future wife and is attacked by another relative using the Supernova outfit he used in 52. Complex, no?

The book ends on a semi-cliffhanger that depends on one of Hunter’s prime Maxims being wrong. After a salutary lesson involving Batgirl and the Joker (based on Batman: The Killing Joke) falls on deaf ears, Booster ignores the warning that the past cannot safely be changed, and with the aid of past and future incarnations deliberately thwarts the murder of the Ted Kord Blue Beetle. With his best friend restored to him he feels ready for anything, but surely, nothing is ever that easy for the Greatest Hero Never Known?

Fast-paced and deeply imbedded in various DC continuities this is a light but readable thriller, but might be a little hard going for readers new to the DCU. However writers Geoff Johns and Jeff Katz do a fine job keeping things accessible whilst Dan Jurgens and Norm Rapmund capably handle the vast cast of characters just passing through. Worth a look, but if you’re unsure, perhaps you should wait for the paperback edition.

Boneyard goes from strength to strength. This sixth black and white collection features more frantic antics of a decent young guy who inherited a cemetery with an extremely engaging – and lively -gang of goblins, monsters and weirdoes in situ.

Michael Paris is developing much more than a crush on Abbey the Hot Vampire Chick, but life – and unlife – is made really complicated by an over-amorous fish-woman, the jock (think “Grease” not Glasgow) werewolf and all the assorted demons and monsters he’s nominally responsible for.

Nevertheless he’s finally summoned up the courage to ask her for a date when pernicious fate sticks out another hobnail-booted foot for him to trip over. That’s how he ends up attending a formal ball held by the Over-God with the power and duty to eradicate all misbehaving supernatural creatures. And then somebody spiked his date’s drink…

Charming, touching and wickedly funny, this is one of the best comics comedies of the last thirty years and should be on everybody’s bookshelf.

No, I’m not kidding.

Enterprise and quality should always be applauded and during the desolate 1990s when sales were dwindling and new markets were desperately needed Marvel went looking for fresh fields to create comics in (as opposed to now when the company claims to be a media franchising outfit that just happens to print funny books – and if you dispute that check out their financial reports and see just how far down the list of products publishing comes).

In the search for fresh markets back then Marvel tapped religion (please don’t make me talk about their Christian Comics line) and popular music to augment their home-grown stable of stars and the prodigious line of toy, cartoon and film licenses, with admittedly, mixed results.

Still and all, a good comic read is a good comic read so this astoundingly impressive general adventure package which just happens to have an Achey-Breaky country singer as the star should come as no surprise to long-time fans and collectors. After all, the immediate post-Golden Age of American comics was littered with product based on the “real-life exploits” of celebrities such as Judy Canova, Alan Ladd, Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis, Bob Hope, and many others.

As high profile franchises they were handled by top artists and writers. Buster Crabbe and John Wayne Adventures frequently featured Al Williamson, Frank Frazetta, Roy G. Krenkel, Joe Orlando, George Evan and Harvey Kurtzman. Dell’s Roy Rogers has issues by the great John Buscema, Pat Boone… No, here, at least, I’m kidding.

The music is side-lined by “King of Comic Book Writers” Paul S. Newman (possibly the most prolific scripter in the business; creator of Solar, Man of the Atom, Turok, Son of Stone and writer of both comic-book and newspaper strip Lone Ranger as well as stories for a host of other companies) and Dan Barry, an artist who quit comics such as Captain America, the Heap and Airboy for the strips Tarzan and Flash Gordon before returning in the 1990s to write and draw Indiana Jones for Dark Horse. Here they spin a couple of traditional yarns, dotted with sly humour, featuring plucky kids encountering a haunted US cavalry fort and a time-jaunt to the court of Edward I of England (that’s Edward Longshanks, 1239-1307, history buffs), ripping yarns that can suspend common sense enough to provide the maximum thrills and spills.

The basics of good comics often get subsumed nowadays by flash, dazzle and “Big Thinking Concepts”, but sometimes the old ways are really the best. I don’t know if you’ll be able to find a retailer with the nerve to stock such an uncool item as Billy Ray Cyrus, but I hope you do because it’s what comics are all about: using compelling pictures to tell a story well: something that’s increasingly a lost art.

The history of popular culture is studded with anthropomorphic animals that have achieved legendary, almost talismanic status. Mickey Mouse, Tiger Tim, Garfield, Smokey (the) Bear, Bonzo…

If that latter causes a puzzled frown that’s a shame because for a while this playful, charming dog-of-dubious-pedigree was a British animorph that rivalled Disney’s mouse and duck combined. Only the artistic integrity and creative drive of his creator George Earnest Studdy prevented the mutt from attaining the global domination (and subsequent tawdry commercialisation) of the Disney duo.

Studdy was born in 1878 in Devon of a military family, but a childhood injury prevented him from following that path, and his prodigious artistic talent moved him to an unsatisfactory position as an engineer before he eventually found his niche as an illustrator and animator.

His first artistic success was a series of Boer War pictures of the Royal Artillery, followed by cartoons and illustrations for such comics as Big Budget, Funny Pips, Jester and Wonder and others, plus papers and magazines including The Graphic, The Humorist, Little Folks, London Magazine, Punch, Windsor Magazine, The Tatler, The Bystander, Illustrated London News, The Field and especially The Sketch. A superb general stylist he was most widely known for his animals although he was an early proponent of science fiction themes as well. He worked extensively in the budding field of advertising.

Deemed unfit to fight in the Great War, he pioneered animation propaganda films that are still acclaimed for their quality and effectiveness. He first began producing pictures of a homely, engaging dog for The Sketch in the early 1920s, which were immensely popular. Eventually “the Studdy dog” became a permanent fixture and was christened Bonzo in the November 8th issue of 1922. The luxuriously painted or drawn single panels became a full gag-strip with the talking dog and his long-suffering lady-friend Chee-Kee captivating young and old alike with their playful yet slyly mature antics.

Bonzo was a merchandising miracle of his time, featuring in games, puzzles, toys of all types, figurines, china and dinnerware, cups, cruets and host of other household objects and all manner of advertising campaigns. He even had his own neon sign in Piccadilly Circus.

Although Studdy voluntarily moved on from his creation to create many other pictorial marvels and to serve his country again in WWII as a draughtsman for the Royal Navy, the dog continued under other hands in strips syndicated worldwide by King Features and in a series of wonderful books and annuals. These began in 1935 and continued until 1952, with translations into many foreign editions. Funny, charming, brilliantly illustrated, overwhelmingly successful and still as entertaining today as it always were, Bonzo is long overdue for an extensive repackaging job. Until such a happy event this little gem should act as a tantalising taster.

During the 1950s, when superheroes were in a seemingly inescapable trough, comic book companies looked to different forms of leading men for their action heroes. In 1955 writer/editor Robert Kanigher created a traditional adventure comic entitled The Brave and the Bold that featured historical strips. The Golden Gladiator, illustrated by Russ Heath was set in the declining days of Rome, The Silent Knight fought injustice in post-Norman Britain, courtesy of Irv Novick, and the already-legendary Joe Kubert drew the adventures of a valiant young Norseman dubbed the Viking Prince.

This last strip appeared in all but one issue (#6), eventually taking over the entire comic, until the burgeoning superhero boom saw B&B become a try-out title with its twenty-fifth issue. Those fanciful, practically “Hollywoodish” Viking sagas were among some of the finest adventure comics of all time and they’re long overdue for a definitive collection of their own, since the character of Jon has long been a fan favourite, intermittently returning in DC’s war titles and often guest-starring in such varied venues as Sgt. Rock and even Justice League of America.

This beautiful, vital and enchanting tale was released to very little fanfare in 1991, but remains a worthy sequel to those early strips. Scripter Lee Marrs took all the advances in our historical knowledge since the 1950s and blended them with the timeless basics of a Classical Edda to entrancing effect. Amidst a culture vibrantly brought to full life by her words and Bo Hampton’s awesome skill with a brush she has grasped a passionate but reserved old archetype and remade him as a fiery young hero of devastating charm, full of all the boisterous vigour of his mythic race, and confronted him with his worst nightmare.

In 10th century Scandinavia, Jon Rolloson, heir to Jarl Rollo of Gallund, is a perfect Northman’s son; fast, tough, fearless and irresistible to all the maids of the village. But the greatest horror of his sixteen years has finally come for him – an arranged marriage for political advantage. He must leave his home and the Viking life to wed a “Civilised” Princess. His joyous days are all done…

But Princess Asa of Hedeby is a young beauty every inch his match in vigour and vitality, and as composed and smart as he is coarse and oafish. Unfortunately, somebody is stealthily trying to thwart the match, even though Jon’s boorishness is enough to give both fathers cause to reconsider, and only the Viking Prince’s rash vow to recover a lost rune treasure and slay a fearsome dragon preserves the bargain. The wedding will proceed… Now all he has to do is find and kill Ansgar, the vilest of all Fire-Wyrms, and not die…

As well as being a superb writer Marrs is an underground cartoonist, animator and computer artist who has assisted Hal Foster on that other sword-wielding epic Prince Valiant, and her grasp of human character and especially comedy elevates this classic tale of romantic endeavour into a multi-faceted gem of captivating quality. Bo Hampton has created some of the best painted comics in the medium: This book is probably still the very best of them.

One of the most accomplished and enjoyable historical romances ever produced in comic form, Viking Glory deserves to be on every fan’s bookshelf. Let’s hope that it’s on DC’s shortlist for a swift re-release.

The Spectre is one of the oldest characters in DC’s vast stable of characters, created by Jerry Siegel and Bernard Baily in 1940 for More Fun Comics #52 and 53. And just like Siegel’s other iconic creation, he suffers from a basic design flaw: he’s just too darn powerful. But, unlike Superman, he’s already dead, so he can’t really be dramatically imperilled. Starting as a virtually omnipotent ghost, he evolved, over various returns and refits into a tormented soul bonded to the incarnation of the biblical Wrath of God.

With his superb version from the early 1990s, John Ostrander shifted the narrative onto the Tabula Rasa that was Jim Corrigan, a depression era cop whose brutal murder released The Spectre into the world of costumed heroes. This take on the character ran for nearly five years and lent a tragic, barbaric humanity to a hero who was simply too big and too strong for periodical comics.

Collected here is the first four-part story-arc wherein the troubled and Earth-bound Corrigan meets the vulnerable Amy Beitermann, a social worker who is the target of a serial killer – and somehow a living link to the detective’s own murder fifty years ago.

Powerful and often shocking, the developing relationship forces The Spectre’s mortal aspect to confront the traumas of his long suppressed childhood as he relives his own death and the ghastly repercussions of his return. With intense, brooding art by long-time collaborator Tom Mandrake, this incarnation of the character was by far the most accessible – and successful. If it had launched a year or so later and it might well have been a star of the budding Vertigo imprint.

The masterful interpretation seems largely forgotten these days but hopefully with DC trawling its back catalogue for worthy book-fodder this tale – and the issues that followed it – might make a speedy reappearance on book store shelves. Let’s hope so…

In this case however having no prior knowledge of the cast will work to your advantage since you’ll have no advance knowledge of who will survive…

As the Russians and American forces race to Berlin in deepest winter, a crack team of hand-picked specialists parachute into a secret rocket base directly in their path. The team has been ordered to capture scientists and technology. Should the booty be impossible to retrieve, at all costs it must be prevented from falling into Soviet hands…

As the hot war ends a Cold one begins the doomed team capably get the “Dirty Dozen” treatment in this gripping, twisty thriller from top creators who are specialists themselves in the field of all-out, testosterone fuelled action. This would make a perfect movie and many cinema-goers would love this brutal and bloody tale.

Reprinting issues #6-10 of the comicbook Star Wars: Rebellion, written by Brandon Badeaux and Rob Williams with art from Michel LaCombe and painted colour by Wil Glass, this is a tense and highly engaging “Caper” yarn, which rattles along like a freight train and delivers the maximum amount of top-notch thrills and spills. Aimed at a slightly older audience this is nonetheless an accessible and inviting read for fans and new readers alike.

Showcase Presents The Flash vol 1

No matter which way you look at it, the Silver Age of the American comic book began with The Flash. It’s an unjust but true fact that being first is not enough; it also helps to be best and people have to notice. The Shield beat Captain America to the news-stands by over a year yet the former is all but forgotten today.

The industry had never really stopped trying to revive the superhero genre when Showcase #4 was released in late summer of 1956, with such precursors as The Avenger (February-September 1955), Captain Flash (November 1954-July 1955), Marvel’s Human Torch, Sub-Mariner and the aforementioned Sentinel of Liberty (December 1953 – October 1955) and even DC’s own Captain Comet (December 1953 – October 1955) and Manhunter from Mars (November 1955 until the end of the 1960’s and almost the end of superheroes again!) still turning up in second-hand-stores and “Five-and-Dime” half-price bins. What made the new Fastest Man Alive stand out and stick was … well, everything!

Once the DC powers-that-be decided to try superheroes once more, they moved pretty fast themselves. Editor Julie Schwartz asked office partner and Golden-Age Flash scripter Robert Kanigher to recreate a speedster for the Space Age, aided and abetted by Carmine Infantino and Joe Kubert, who had also worked on the previous incarnation. The new Flash was Barry Allen, a forensic scientist simultaneously struck by lightning and bathed in the exploding chemicals of his lab. Supercharged by the accident, Barry took his superhero identity from a comic book featuring his predecessor (a scientist named Jay Garrick who was exposed to the mutagenic fumes of “Hard Water”). Designing a sleek, streamlined bodysuit (courtesy of Infantino – a major talent who was approaching his artistic and creative pinnacle) Barry Allen became the point man for the spectacular revival of a genre and an entire industry.

This gloriously economical, vast black and white tome superbly compliments Infantino’s talents, collecting not only all four Showcase tryout issues and the first full fifteen issues of his own title, but also kicks off with the very last Golden Age adventure from Flash Comics #104 (February 1949). In ‘The Rival Flash’ Kanigher, Infantino and inker Frank Giacoia re-examine the first Flash’s origin when an evil scientist recreates the secret of his speed. Exuberant, avuncular and hugely entertaining in its own right, it’s nonetheless a dated, clunky tale in comparison to what follows.

In sharp counter-point ‘Mystery of the Human Thunderbolt’ (scripted by Kanigher) and ‘The Man Who Broke the Time Barrier’ (written by the superb John Broome) are polished, coolly sophisticated short stories that introduce the comfortingly suburban new superhero and firmly establish the broad parameters of his universe. Whether defeating bizarre criminal masterminds such as The Turtle or returning the criminal exile Mazdan to his own century the new Flash was a protagonist of keen insight and sharp wits as well as overwhelming power.

Showcase #8 (June 1957) led with another Kanigher tale. ‘The Secret of the Empty Box’, a perplexing but pedestrian mystery, saw Frank Giacoia return as inker, but the real landmark is the Broome thriller ‘The Coldest Man on Earth’. With this yarn the author confirmed and consolidated the new phenomenon by introducing the first of a Rogues Gallery of outlandish super-villains. Unlike the Golden Age the new super-heroes would face predominantly costumed foes rather than thugs and spies. Bad guys would henceforth be as memorable as the champions of justice. Captain Cold would return time and again. Broome would go on to create every single member of Flash’s pantheon of super-foes.

Joe Giella inked the two adventures in Showcase #13 (April 1958) ‘Around the World in 80 Minutes’, written by Kanigher and Broome’s ‘Master of the Elements’ which introduced the outlandish Mr. Element, who returned in Showcase#14 (June 1958) with a new M.O. and identity – Doctor Alchemy. ‘The Man who Changed the Earth!’ is a great crime-caper, but Kanigher’s eerie ‘Giants of the Time-World!’ is a masterful fantasy thriller and a worthy effort to bow out on. When the Scarlet Speedster graduated to his own title John Broome was the lead writer, supplemented eventually by Gardner Fox. Kanigher would return briefly in the mid-1960s and would later write a number of tales during DC’sRelevancy’ period.

The Flash #105 launched with a February-March 1959 cover-date (so it was out for Christmas 1958) and featured Broome, Infantino and Giella’s sci-fi chiller ‘Conqueror From 8 Million B.C.!’ and introduced yet another super-villain in ‘The Master of Mirrors!’. ‘The Pied Piper of Peril!’ in #106 introduced another criminal menace, whilst the second story introduced one of the most charismatic and memorable baddies in comics history. Gorilla Grodd and his hidden race of super-simians debuted in ‘Menace of the Super-Gorilla!’, promptly returning for the next two issues,

Presumably this early confidence was fuelled by DC’s inexplicable but commercially sound pro-Gorilla editorial stance (for some reason any comic with a big monkey in it markedly outsold those that didn’t in those far-ago days) but these tales are also packed with tension, action and engagingly challenging fantasy concepts.

Issue #107 lead with the ‘Return of the Super-Gorilla!’ by the regular team of Broome Infantino and Giella, a multi-layered fantasy thriller that took our hero from the African (invisible) city of the Super-Gorillas to the subterranean citadel of antediluvian Ornitho-Men, and ‘The Amazing Race Against Time’ featured an amnesiac who could outrun the Fastest Man Alive in a desperate race against time to save creation. With every issue the stakes got higher and the quality and narrative ingenuity got better!

Frank Giacoia inked #108’s high-tech death-trap thriller ‘The Speed of Doom!’ featuring trans-dimensional raiders but Giella was back for ‘The Super-Gorilla’s Secret Identity!’ wherein Grodd devises a scheme to outwit evolution itself. The next issue brought ‘The Return of the Mirror-Master’ with the first in a series of bizarre physical transformations that would increasingly become a signature device for Flash stories, whilst the Space Race provided a evocative maguffin for a fantastic undersea adventure in the ‘Secret of the Sunken Satellite’.

The Flash #110 was a huge landmark, not so much for the debut of another worthy candidate to the burgeoning Rogues Gallery in ‘The Challenge of the Weather Wizard’ (inked by Schwartz’s artistic top-gun Murphy Anderson) but rather for the introduction of Wally West, who in a bizarre and suspicious replay of the lightning strike that created the Scarlet Speedster became a junior version of the Fastest Man Alive. Inked by Giella, ‘Meet Kid Flash!’ introduced the first sidekick of the Silver Age (cover dated December 1959-January 1960 and just pipping Aqualad who premiered in Adventure Comics #269 which had a February off-sale date).

Not only would Kid Flash begin his own series of back-up tales from the very next issue (a sure sign of the confidence the creators had in the character) but he would eventually inherit the mantle of the Flash himself – one of the few occasions in comics where the torch-passing actually stuck.

Anderson also inked ‘The Invasion of the Cloud Creatures’ in # 111, which successfully overcomes its frankly daft premise to produce a tense sci-fi thriller and nicely counterpoints the first solo outing for Kid Flash in ‘The Challenge of the Crimson Crows!’ This folksy parable has small-town kid Wally West use his new powers to rescue a bunch of kids on the slippery slope to juvenile delinquency. Perhaps a tad paternalistic and heavy-handed by today’s standards, in the opening months of 1960 this was a strip about a little boy heroically dealing with a kid’s real dilemmas, and the strip would remain concerned with human scaled problems, leaving super-menaces and world saving for team-ups with his mentor.

In #112 ‘The Mystery of the Elongated Man’ introduced that super stretchable character to the DC universe in an intriguing puzzler whilst Kid Flash tackled juvenile Go-Carters and corrupt school-contractors in the surprisingly gripping ‘Danger on Wheels!’ The Trickster launched his crime career in #113’s lead tale ‘Danger in the Air!’ and the Kid took a break so that his senior partner could defeat ‘The Man Who Claimed the Earth!’ a full-on cosmic epic wherein the alien Po-Siden attempts to bring the lost colony of our world back into the Empire of Zus.

Captain Cold and Murphy Anderson returned for ‘The Big Freeze’, where the smitten villain turns Central City into a glacier just to impress Flash’s girlfriend Iris West. Meanwhile her nephew Wally saved a boy unjustly accused of cheating from a life of crime when he falls under the influence of the ‘King of the Beatniks!’ The Flash #115 featured another bizarre transformation, courtesy of Gorilla Grodd in ‘The Day Flash Weighed 1000 Pounds!’, and when aliens attempted to conquer the Earth he needed ‘The Elongated Man’s Secret Weapon’ as well as the guest-star himself to save the day. Once again Murphy Anderson’s inking gave the over-taxed Joe Giella a breather whilst taking art-lovers’ breath away in this beautiful, pacy thriller.

‘The Man Who Stole Central City’ had a seemingly fool-proof way of killing the Flash in #116, which took some outwitting, and Kid Flash returned in ‘The Race to Thunder Hill’, a father-son tale of rally driving, but with car-stealing bandits and a young love interest for Wally to complicate the proceedings. ‘Here Comes Captain Boomerang’ by Broome, Infantino and Anderson introduced the Australian super-criminal in what is still one of the most original origin tales ever concocted, whilst ‘The Madcap Inventors of Central City’ saw Gardner Fox (creator of the Golden Age Flash) join the writing team with an ill-considered attempt to reintroduce the comedy relief trio of Winky, Blinky and Noddy to the modern Flash Fans. The fact that you’ve never heard of them should indicate how well that went, although the yarn, illustrated by Infantino and Giella is a fast, witty and enjoyably silly change of pace.

Issue #118 highlighted the period’s (and DC’s) fascination with Hollywood in ‘The Doomed Scarecrow!’ (inked by Anderson), a sharp thriller featuring a villain with a unique reason to get rid of our hero whilst Wally and a friend had to spend the night in a “haunted house” in the Kid Flash chiller ‘The Midnight Peril!’

This wonderful first volume ends with The Flash #119, in which Broome, Infantino and Anderson relate the adventure of ‘The Mirror-Master’s Magic Bullet’, which our hero narrowly evades only to join an old friend in ‘The Elongated Man’s Undersea Trap’ which introduced the vivacious Sue Dibny (as a newly wed “Mrs Elongated Man”) in a mysterious and stirring tale of sub-sea slavers.

These earliest tales were historically vital to the development of our industry, but, quite frankly, so what? The first exploits The Flash should be judged solely on their merit, and on those terms they are punchy, awe-inspiring, beautifully illustrated and captivating thrillers that amuse, amaze and enthral both new readers and old devotees. This lovely collection is a must-read item for anybody in love with our art-form
